North Lakhimpur is the headquarters of Lakhimpur district, which became a district in October 1971. The district administration describes an economy mainly dependent on agriculture and paddy, with the Siang and Papum Pare districts of Arunachal Pradesh to the north and the Brahmaputra and Majuli to the south, and train services since 1963. The town’s municipal board dates from 1963, covers about 13.7 km² and had about 59,800 residents in 2011 — with a literacy rate above the district average. The district has four municipal boards: North Lakhimpur, Bihpuria, Narayanpur and Dhakuakhana.
A district headquarters this close to Arunachal draws students, patients and buyers from both states. Schools, hospitals, coaching centres and wholesalers that are easy to find online — with clear contact details — reach those people before they travel.
