The home town of the Hemkosh
Dergaon’s municipal board places the town in Golaghat district on National Highway 37, with Baruah Bamun Gaon as its nearest station and Jorhat’s Rowriah airport the nearest airport. The town committee dates from 1960 and became a municipal board in 2004. The board notes that Hemchandra Barua, who compiled the Hemkosh — the earliest Assamese–English dictionary — came from Dergaon. About 20,000 people lived there in 2011.
A highway town between Golaghat and Jorhat serves both its own residents and people passing through. Schools, coaching centres, clinics and shops that put clear information online reach families from the surrounding area before they make the trip.
