The old capital of the Bijni kingdom
Abhayapuri’s municipal board places the town 21 km from Bongaigaon on National Highway 31, about 200 km west of Guwahati, with its own railway station. It was the third capital of the Bijni kingdom, founded in 1671, and is named after Devi Abhoyamata, the royal family’s deity; after the 1897 earthquake badly damaged the palaces, the court moved, and the kingdom was taken over by the Government of India in 1956. About 15,800 people lived in the town in 2011.
Heritage like this is a story that almost no local business tells online. A guest house, guide, school or shop that explains where it is in relation to the old palace sites and how to get there from Bongaigaon or Guwahati gives visitors a reason to stop.
