Assam’s south-western corner
South Salmara-Mankachar district was carved out of Dhubri and inaugurated on 9 February 2016. Its headquarters, Hatsingimari, is about 245 km from Guwahati. The district borders Bangladesh to the west and Meghalaya to the south-east, the Brahmaputra flows through it from east to west, and many residents live on riverine chars; agriculture and forest products, led by paddy, are the main livelihood. Mankachar, the largest town, lies at the state’s extreme south-western end.
Distance from the state capital and a river that divides the district make travel slow, so a phone search is often how people decide which shop, school or service is worth the trip. A business website that answers the basic questions saves customers a wasted journey.
